Choosing the data structure type within GUI

Opening a mesh file from the GUI

Use case

Within the GUI a user wishes to load some mesh file. Let us assume the user already knows the type/format of mesh file. What should be the interface process be (in order to load the file) ?

Design choice

The user is not asked for the format of the file but only to designate the mesh file. The default reader shall be AIF reader. The AIF reader determines whether the considered mesh file represents a manifold or a non manifold mesh structure. When the mesh file happens to represent a manifold mesh a manifold reader reloads the file. At this stage the interface will present the available manifold datastructures and the user shall select his favorite data structure (whe he has one). "Surface Mesh" shall be selected by default.

Design notes: if on usage this double pass loading strategy proves to introduce too much waiting time, the interface could choose to invert the process and always require a target data structure prior to loading. If the load fails (e.g. because the mesh was non manifold or a corrupted manifold) it would be the user's responsability to switch to AIF.

Using a filter from the GUI

Use case

A user as at hand some mesh internally represented by the GUI with some given Data Structure (DS) named DS1. DS1 can be the resulting from loading a mesh file or the output DS type of some previously applied filter. The user now wishes to apply a filter that doesn't accept the DS1 type as input but only DS2.

Design choice

When the users chooses the filter to apply to DS1, the interface notifies that this filter cannot be applied to DS1 type meshes and that the filter can only treat DS2 type meshes. It is now the user responsiblity to manually (possibly through the GUI) convert the considered mesh from DS1 to the expected DS2 type, prior to invocating the filter again.
